Meet project manager and quantity surveyor, Callum, who joined our team in June 2021. Find out what a typical day looks like for Callum, as well as what he enjoys most about working for WOODSmith Construction Group…
What is your role at WOODSmith Construction?
I’m a project manager and quantity surveyor on the residential division. I oversee and run all aspects of work and business on the residential sector and report directly to the directors of the company.
What does a typical working day look like for you?
I attend site visits to live projects ensuring everyone is doing what they need to be and to check we are working to schedule. I will order any materials required for site ahead of time, so no one is ever waiting around. I also create tenders and schedule our rates for future projects and ensure the order book is full. Where required, I will communicate with customers and send financial forecasts to the company accountants.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the sense of achievement once a project is complete. It’s great seeing the progress from starting on day one, to handing it over when finished.
Why did you choose to work in the construction industry?
From a young age I have always had a passion for property and I’ve always been technically minded. For me, the construction industry fits perfectly with my interests and skills.
What do you enjoy most about working at WOODSmith Construction?
WOODSmith Construction is a great place to work. The growth and expansion plans for the business provide so much opportunity for personal development and success. We have a close-knit team with a lot of experience which creates a good working environment and makes it an enjoyable place to work.
What’s been your favourite project you’ve worked on?
Albion Terrace in Whitby.
Please can you give us a brief career history?
After finishing my studies at university in quantity surveying, I worked for Manhatten Properties which is part of the wider SDDE Smith Group. I helped to develop the business while Host & Stay, the property management arm of the group, was formed. I oversaw the construction side which was crucial for my own growth and development and gave me the day-to-day skills required for my current role at WOODSmith Construction.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
As a child my ‘dream job’ was to be an astronaut. I’ve always been very interested in astrology and continued this interest throughout my studies in school and college.
How do you have your tea/coffee?
Coffee with milk, no sugar – sweet enough!
Do you have any hobbies?
I try to keep physically active as much as possible. I play 5-aside once a week, attend the gym as much as I can and play golf when the weather is right!
Do you have any hidden talents?
A mass of knowledge of useless facts.
