WOODSmith Construction Group, a leading Teesside-based construction company, has sponsored the Straight Mile Series at Redcar Racecourse for the 2024 season.
In a strong show of local support, WOODSmith Construction Group is making a big impact in both the building industry and the local sports scene. Specialising in end-to-end services for residential, commercial, and public sector projects, WOODSmith has recently sponsored the Straight Mile Series at Redcar Racecourse for the 2024 racing season—the only series of its kind in Great Britain.
The first race of the series, The WOODSmith Construction Straight Mile Fillies’ Handicap Stakes, kicked off on Monday with an exciting win by Summit, trained by North Yorkshire’s own David O’Meara. The excitement is set to continue through the season, culminating in the grand finale on October 5.
Gary Wood, Managing Director of WOODSmith, brings a personal touch to this sponsorship. A lifelong racing enthusiast and racehorse owner, Gary’s connection to Redcar Races runs deep. He reflects on this partnership with pride:
“Sponsoring the Straight Mile Series is a unique opportunity for me to support a racecourse that has played a significant role in my life. Amy Fair and her team do an excellent job, and I am proud to sponsor the only Straight Mile Series in the country. As a local company employing local people, this sponsorship allows us to promote our business while giving back to the community.”
Amy Fair, General Manager of Redcar Racecourse, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the importance of local partnerships:
“We are delighted to have a locally embedded business like WOODSmith Construction sponsoring a series of races that are a vital part of the Redcar calendar.”
Gary also added a personal touch to the sponsorship by naming a race after his late Grandad, Mike Wood. The race, titled the ‘In loving Memory of Michael Wood Handicap’ will take place on the 21st June, and stands as both a celebration of his life and a heartfelt tribute.
WOODSmith Construction Group’s commitment to Teesside extends far beyond horse racing. They were named North Yorkshire StartUp of the Year at the 2023 StartUp Awards, demonstrating their excellence in residential, commercial, and public sector developments as well as being shortlisted for several other accolades.
Their community focus also includes significant investments in local football, helping teams succeed and grow, and promoting club growth for community benefit. WOODSmith currently supports organisations; MFC Foundation, North Riding County FC, and Redcar Athletic FC to name but a few.
By championing local businesses, sporting events and communities, WOODSmith Construction Group exemplifies the spirit of Teesside—strong, community-focused, and driven by excellence.
