Roll Lathe Shop Extension Commercial Project

WOODSmith Construction Group’s commercial team were tasked with extending the machine room to desired scale and refurbishing the existing building at Roll Lathe Shop.

The plan was to construct the building with insulation block and render, insulate and board internally, with a UPVC window in the EDM room and the template storage room. Finally, supply and install a fitted hob and oven, tall fridge freezer and large microwave in the mess room.

Preparations & Planning

Initial meetings were held with the client to discuss the scope of works required, then project drawings were received and studied so we could meet the design specifications, as well as H&S issues. The Commercial Team developed RAMS for the project which were included in the workpack for the job. Finally,  we ensured that all staff on the project had the correct competencies for the work required.

The area was cat scanned prior to starting work to see if there was anything hazardous underground such as live cables.

As it is a working site, British Steel needed access to their available areas to continue working. The area was near the main offices and roll lathe bay with heavy activity in the area so we ensured that the area was secured with heras fencing and signage was in place to inform people that it was a construction area and to keep out. Furthermore, we had to coordinate deliveries and book them in with security so that they didn’t affect the other work going on on site.

The Build

The build included three phases of construction; civils, electrical and final fixtures.

In terms of civil works, WOODSmith’s commercial team completed the cleared and prepared the area and marked out as per the drawings. Then the team constructed the building with insulation block and render, insulate and board internally, with a UPVC window in the EDM room and the template storage room. The roof was insulated with a steel sheet to suit the existing roof. Then the team re-laid and recovered the floor in the existing office and mess room. Finally, a new internal doorway was installed between the existing office and the new building.

Then it was onto electrical; the team extended the existing socket ring main and lighting circuit into the new building, and supplied and installed A/C units in the room housing the EDM machine, office and the mess room suitable for the room size and heat load. Finally, they supplied and installed a fitted hob and oven, tall fridge freezer and large microwave in the mess room.

Final fixtures came last with installation of wall and base units with easy clean door surfaces to match the existing layout, durable work tops and sink unit with drainer.

Final Product

The project was completed within the clients desired timescale and all work was completed to a high standard, another successful project for WOODSmith and British Steel!

WOODSmith Construction Group continues to work on the site and are proud to be working for such a prestigious company, British Steel.
